EAST HERKIMER-Adelbert Skip Smith age 73, of Smith Road, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning December 8, 2005 in his home. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on August 13, 1932 in the town of Herkimer, son of the late Milo and Mabel Hull Smith. A lifelong East Herkimer resident, he graduated from Herkimer High School with the class of 1952. Skip was the sixth generation to work the Smith Dairy Farm in East Herkimer. Besides working on the farm he had also worked for the Herkimer Pallet Shop for twenty years, the LaSalle Labs in Little Falls, was a Security Guard at Mohawk Valley General Hospital, Ilion and for the past eight years was employed by Oak Hill Cemetery in Herkimer.
He loved the outdoors and nature and was a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed watching football and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Skip was known to many as honest, hard working and was gifted with a unique sense of humor. No matter how stressful a situation, whether it at work or socially he could ease the tension with a witty remark or a good joke. To his family he was someone you could go to in good times or bad and was always there for them. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Surviving are his wife Dolores Ingerham Smith with whom he shared a loving union of thirty-six years, a daughter, Loretta Lynn Smith of Albany, four step-children, Mona, Liz, Kenny and Todd Edick, two brothers and their wives, John and Marlene Smith, Ronald Ronnie and Jackie Smith all of East Herkimer, two sisters, Beverly and her husband Frank Lyga of East Herkimer, Norma Foster of Herkimer, seven grandchildren, two great-grandsons, a sister-in-law Phyllis (widow of Wilfred) Smith, many nieces, nephews, cousins, lots of good friends including special friends Walt Kalynycz and George Uebler and his special cat friend Kitty.
Funeral service will be on Saturday morning at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday (today) from 5:00 until 9:00 pm.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Hospice Inc. and Palliative Care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Tina Clark for all the care and compassion shown to Skip during his illness.
