Obituary

Herkimer-Agnes Griswold, 99, a resident of Folts Homes, Herkimer, NYsince 1995, died on October 23, 2000. She was born in Amsterdam, NY on February19, 1901. She had three sisters and two brothers, all deceased. Her father,Frank Joslin, was General Manager of the Inman Mfg. Co. In the fall of 1918 sheentered Skidmore College with the first four-year class of that institution. Atthe same time, her future husband, Laurence Griswold, from Herkimer, enteredUnion College, Schenectady, NY. Both graduated from their respective schools in1922; Agnes as a home economist and Laurence as a civil engineer. Agnes taughthome economics in Cooperstown, NY prior to her marriage in 1924. Her husbandbecame principal engineer of the Utica Board of Water Supply. The couple who lived in Utica had three children: Mrs. Robert J. Maher ofBethel Park, PA, Mrs. Maurice Dow of S. Sutton, NH and Laurence Griswold ofMarcy, NY. There are six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Agnes was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Hartford forover sixty years. She sang in the church choir for several decades and wasactive in various of the church's women's groups. Agnes was an avid vegetable gardener, an astute Contract bridge player and anunwavering fan of the New York Yankees. Her family members were fans of herraspberry and blueberry pies. After her husband's death in 1973, Agnes became enthused with brailling andbecame a Library of Congress-certified brailler. She brailled with the MohawkValley Brailling Group for about twenty years. Burial will be a private family ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer, NY.Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., Herkimer. Memorial gifts may be sent to Folts Homes, Herkimer, or the First UnitedMethodist Church , New Hartford.
