MOHAWK - Alan Edward Ervin age 53 of East Main Street passed away on Monday morning August 21, 2006 at his home.
He was born on July 26, 1953 in Herkimer son of the late Edward Butch and Jean Bartels Ervin. A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of West Canada Valley High School with the class of 1972.
On September 1, 1979 he was united in marriage with the former Catherine Sparks in the Frankfort United Methodist Church. They resided in both Herkimer and Ilion before moving permanently to Mohawk in 1980.
For thirty-three years he worked for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion, retiring in July of this year.
Alan had a strong belief in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer and a member of Newport Lodge # 455 Free and Accepted Masons.
Two words that best describe Alan are Protect and Serve. His whole life was devoted to fire service. As a member of the Alexander Hose Company in Mohawk he served as Vice President from 1989 to 1990, as its President from 1990 to 1991 and was currently serving as a Trustee. He also was a member of Newport Volunteer Fire Department. Alan was a Lieutenant with the Mohawk Fire Department Fire Police and was active in the State Fire Police Association, Herkimer County Fire Police Association where he served as Director and was also a member of the Oneida County Fire Police.
To all that knew him they will remember a caring, soft spoken man with a quiet sense of humor who was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his grandchildren. He will never be forgotten.
Surviving besides his loving wife of twenty-six years Catherine are three sons, Christopher Schultz, Matthew James Ervin, Brian Paul Ervin and his wife Mary all of Mohawk, one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Schultz of Little Falls, a brother Richard and his wife Kathleen Ervin of Fairfield, one sister Elizabeth Jane Ervin of Herkimer, three grandchildren Paige Isabella Ford, Chase Charles Ford both of Little Falls, Zaryona Stewart of Mohawk, a close cousin and friend David Hofstetter and family of Alpharetta, GA, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be on Thursday at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Middleville Cemetery. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 5:00 until 9:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Mohawk Fire Department Chiefs Fund or the Newport Lodge # 455 F & AM. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Alexander Hose Company are asked to meet at the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm for services. Members of Newport Lodge # 455 F & AM are asked to meet at the funeral at 8:00 pm for ritualistic services.
