Obituary

HERKIMER - Albert Lansing Lowell, 82, of West German Street, formerly of Main Road, East Herkimer, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, Utica. He was born Oct. 15, 1920, in East Herkimer, son of the late Charles and Lela Snyder Lowell. A lifelong East Herkimer resident, he was educated in Herkimer schools. In September of 1939, he joined the U.S. Army and in World War II served with the 1st Infantry Division in Algeria-French Morocco, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Sicily and Tunisia. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1948, he married Bertha Nidhart in Rome; she died in 1967. He married Louise Binney in 1969 in Herkimer; she passed away in 1972. In 1976 he married Eileen Williams in Herkimer. She preceded him in death in 1992.For many years Al was a quality control inspector for Remington Rand, UNIVAC and MDS. He retired in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls. Al had a strong love for the outdoors; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. He was friend to many and will never be forgotten.Surviving are two sons and their wives, Charles and Mary Lowell of Mohawk and Albert and Cathy Lowell of East Herkimer; three daughters, Iris and her husband Keith Whaley of Montverde, Fla., Bonnie and her husband Paul Wentrick of Marcy and Debra Williams of Maryland; along with other stepchildren; a sister, Mildred Luce of Herkimer; nine grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents and three wives he was predeceased by two stepdaughters, Julie Brown and Susan Clark; three brothers, Ralph, Clarence and Ben Lowell; five sisters, Anna Reisdorph, Myrtle Ropeter, Bessie Tarbox, Marguerite Guyer and Minnie C. Vanderwiel.Funeral service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls, will officiate. Mr. Lowell will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
