RICHFIELD SPRINGS Alice J. Sheridan, age 87, of Sheridan Road, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, April 6, 2003 in Valley Health Services, Inc. Herkimer.
She was born on December 3, 1915, in Utica, the daughter of the late Earle and Florence (Kelly) Edwards. She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1933 and in 1937 she graduated from Cortland Normal School. She took extension courses at Buffalo State Teachers College and Syracuse University. On June 29, 1944 she married Gerald F. Sheridan, Sr. They shared a loving a devoted marriage of 45 years until his passing in 1989. For 30 years she taught school, starting at a country school in Courtland County and then at Cherry Valley. She specialized in Special Education and continued at Richfield Spring, West Frankfort, Mohawk, and Herkimer BOCES retiring in 1986.
In addition to a teaching career and the care and nurturing she set aside for her family, Alice was active in community activities. For many years she volunteered at the local Blood Mobiles, Bassett Hospital and was a charter member of the Leather Stocking Caregivers. In her leisure time she enjoyed doing handiwork, swimming, walking, reading, traveling and quiet moments in her memory garden. Alice was women of wisdom and was passionate about lifes principals and commitments. She was well respected by her students, colleagues and friends and will be greatly missed. She enjoyed being around people, talking with them and sharing ideas. To know Alice was to look at and enjoy this world a little better. She had a strong belief in God and lived a quiet devoted Christian life. She was a member of The Church of Christ Uniting.
She is survived by her sons, C. Edward Sheridan and his wife Carol of Bolton Landing, Gerald Sheridan and his wife Cheryl of Bergen, Peter J. Sheridan and his wife JoAnn of Bandera, TX, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Alice Mikki on November 11, 1995, her granddaughter, Nekisha Sheridan on August 5, 1998 and her only brother CB Edwards.
Funeral Service will be on Wednesday at 11:00a.m. in The Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
