Obituary

WEST WINFIELD - Alice Mae Young, 80, of 104 North Washington St., Herkimer, formerly of Winfield Scott House, West Winfield, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, 2004, in Folts Homes, Herkimer. She was born March 23, 1923, in Claremont, N.H., daughter of the late Eric and Dorothy Benson. Alice was raised in New Hampshire and at 16 years of age graduated from Towel High School, Newport, N.H., with the "class of 1940." On Oct. 9, 1943, she married Willard Young in Claremont, N.H. Theirs was a loving and caring union of 41 years until his passing in 1984. She has resided in West Winfield for the last 25 years before entering Folts Homes last September. While living in West Winfield, she had worked at the West Winfield Public Library and was secretary of the West Winfield Senior Citizens. Alice was a creative person who loved to write poetry and enjoyed drawing. She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are one son, Michael Young of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Gloria McCarthy of Herkimer and Dot Kessler and her husband George of Prospect; a brother, Richard Benson and his wife Beulah of Newport, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Jennifer Cashen of Danville, Va.; 13 nieces, nephews, many cousins in Norway and the U.S. and her longtime friend, Alice Casey of Ilion. Besides her parents and husband, Willard, a brother, Terry Cashen, preceded her in death. A memorial service for Mrs. Young will be held in the Wakeman Chapel of Folts Homes at a later time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Folts Homes, Herkimer or the West Winfield Volunteer Fire Department. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
