RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Arlene Grant Palmer age 82 formerly of Elm Street passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon September 3, 2011 in the Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.
She was born on December 19, 1928 in Hobart, daughter of the late Chester and Evelyn Dumond Grant. Arlene was raised in Schoharie where she graduated from Schoharie Central with the class of 1949 and furthered her education by graduating from the Royal Academy of Beauty Culture in Schenectady. For four years she owned and operated Arlenes Beauty Shop in Central Bridge.
On July 10, 1949 she was united in marriage with Thomas Palmer in the Lutheran Church in Central Bridge. Together they shared a loving and devoted union of 55 years until his passing on April 22, 2004. Arlene and her husband moved to Richfield Springs in 1955 coming from Central Bridge.
To all who knew her, Mrs. Palmer will be remembered as a caring person. Any conversation with her was straight and to the point but you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with her. Her home and family were her entire life and she found much joy in cooking and baking for them. Arlene was happiest when she was surrounded by her friends and family, especially her three cherished grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Marie Karins and her husband James of Waterviliet, a daughter-in-law, Mary Jean Palmer of Groton, CT, a brother, Harold Grant and his wife Beryl of Altamont, a sister-in-law, Marlene Grant of Jamestown, three grandchildren, Jessica Marie Palmer, Michael Thomas Palmer both of Phoenix, AZ, James Robert Karins of Waterviliet, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband Thomas she was preceded in death by her son Robert Thomas Palmer on October 16, 1992 and a brother, Robert Grant.
Calling hours for Mrs. Palmer will be in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs on Wednesday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm with a funeral service to follow at 4:00 pm. Interment in St. Josephs Cemetery Richfield Springs will take place at a later time convenient to the family.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Alzheimers Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
