RICHFIELD SPRINGS Arnold L. VanAken, Sr. 85 of West James Street, Richfield Springs, passed awayon Friday evening, April 7, 2000 at Woodhaven Drive, Guilderland, where he andhis wife have recently taken residence.He was born on September 25, 1914 in Mount Vernon, NY, son ofthe late Vernon and Elizabeth Hocking Van Aken. Arnold was raised in Yonkers andgraduated from Saunders Technical and Trade School. On June 9, 1935 he marriedAgnes Dillmann in the Park Hill First Reformed Church, Yonkers. For forty yearshe worked for the Bendix Aviation Corporation, Teterboro, NJ, retiring from theNavigation and Control Division in 1978. It was in 1980 that he and his wifemoved to Richfield Springs coming from Yonkers. While living in Yonkers he was amember of the Park Hill First Reformed Church and in 1980 joined the TrinityReformed Church, Richfield Springs. He was also a member of the BendixCorporation Labor Union and the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens.
Surviving him besides his wife of 64 years Agnes are one son,Arnold L. Jr. and his wife Mary Allan Van Aken of Hockessin, DE; a daughter,
Alice and her husband the Reverend David Poyta ofGuilderland; a brother; Warren and his wife Marion Van Aken of Tampa, FL; asister, Viola Mudge of Accokeek, MD; nine grandchildren, Thomas, Cynthia, Susan,Sandra, Adam and Sarah Van Aken, Kareem, Nicole and Jonathan Poyta; two greatgrandsons, Michael and Matthew Van Aken, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Hewas preceded in death by a son Thomas E. Van Aken in 1967 and two brothersVernon and Clarence Van Aken.
Funeral service will be on Monday evening at 7:00 PM inTrinity Reformed Church, Richfield Springs with the Reverend Michael McDonaldpastor officiating. Interment will take place on Tuesday at 2:00 PM in MountHope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friendsin J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs onMonday (today) form 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity ReformedChurch, Richfield Springs or the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad.Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
