MOHAWK-Arthur Oren Cotton age 95 of State Highway # 5-S passed away on Wednesday January 27, 2010 in Little Falls Hospital. He had the peace and comfort of his loving family at side.
He was born on December 3, 1914 in Middlefield, son of the late Oren P. and Jemima Plenderleith Cotton. A lifelong area resident he was raised in Middlefield and was a graduate of Cooperstown High School. A veteran of World War II he joined the US Navy in May of 1944 he was stationed at the Naval Reserve Station in Treasure Island, CA, had served aboard the SS Orman D. Munn and was honorably dischargedat Lido Beach, LI, NY in December of 1945 attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. On November 28, 1949 he enlisted with the US Army National Guard and served until 1951 and was discharged with the rank of Corporal. In January of 1958 he reenlisted with the National Guard. He served until January of 1961 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Mr. Cotton was first married to the former Gladys E. Hyde who died in 1966. On July 1, 1967 he was united in marriage with the former Josephine Janiec in the Dennison Corners Church, town of German Flatts.
For twenty-nine years Arthur worked as a woodworker in the Gun Stock Department of Remington Arms Company, Ilion, retiring in 1967. He later went to work for the Mohawk Central Schoolsystem. After thirteen years of service with the school system he started to work for the Herkimer County Sheriffs Department where he was employed for fifteen years and remained there until he permanently retired.
Mr. Cotton had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Dennison Corners Church where he had served as a Deacon. He will also be long remembered for those church dinners where cooked the turkey or made the stuffed pork. To all who knew him, he was a caring gentleman who found much joy doing for others. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are his loving wife of forty-two years Josephine, three daughters and their husbands, Alice and Frank Wrisley of Mohawk, June and Glenn Golden of Ilion, Linda and Dana Campbell of Claremont, NH, a step-daughter, Janice Reynolds of Morehouse Ville, one step-son, Michael Synenki and his wife Elsie of Little Falls, nineteen cherished grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and first wife Gladys he was preceded in death by two brothers Robert and George Cotton, a step-daughter, Margaret Coyne and his granddaughter Rene Ann Yutzler in 1989.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am in the Dennison Corners Church,Robinson Roadin Mohawk. The Reverend Donald King, Pastor and the Reverend Richard Gay will officiate. Interment with military honors will take place later this spring in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer on Friday (today) from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Little Falls Hospital or the Dennison Corners Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
