VESTAL - Arthur R. Elwood, 95, of Castle Gardens Road, formerlyof Herkimer and Hancock, died on Sunday, October 8, 2000 in Susquehanna Nursing Home,Johnson City, NY. He was born on January 11, 1905, in Mohawk, son of the late JamesD. and Letitia Foster Elwood. Arthur was raised in Herkimer and graduated from HerkimerHigh School. He then went on to Syracuse University. On August 1, 1936, he married DorothyHeath in Avoca, NY. A loving and devoted union of over sixty-one years until her passingon February 11, 1998. For thirty years Mr. Elwood was president of the First National Bankin Hancock, retiring in 1977. He had lived in Vestal since 1993. He was a member of EmoryUnited Methodist Church, Hancock, the Hancock Rotary International, the Kappa SigmaFraternity Syracuse University, and over 70 years a member of Herkimer Lodge #423F&AM, where he had served as Master of the Lodge in 1932. Surviving him are one son, A. Raymond Elwood and his wife Suzanneof Cicero; a daughter, Carolyn Groupe of Newark Valley; one sister, Helen Wires of St.Augustine, FL; two grandsons and their wives, Craig R. and Jeanette Elwood of Clay, ScottA. and Phyllis Elwood of Mattydale; three great-grandchildren, Heather, Alyssa and LexiElwood. Besides his wife Dorothy, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Elwood in1974, J. William Ellwood in 1999 and his son-in-law Irving Groupe in 1992. Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in FennerFuneral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer with the Reverend William Otis,pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer and the Reverend Rolf Eschke of theFirst Congregational UCC Church, Newark Valley officiating. Interment will follow in OakHill Cemetery.
