RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Beatrice Gallo, age 92, formerly of Prey Hill Road, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 17, 2011, in Folts Homes, Herkimer. She was born on June 28, 1918, in Wise County, VA a daughter of the late Samuel and Lydia Beverly McCracken.She was raised and educated in Virginia where she graduated high school. She continued her education at Ohio State College.On September 11, 1937, she married John Louis Gallo in Union City, NJ. They shared a devoted union of sixty-three years until his passing on August 30, 2000.In 1960 they moved to Richfield Springs, coming from North Bergen, NJ. While living in New Jersey Mrs. Gallo had worked for various night clubs as a waitress. Beatrice was a strong willed woman when she thought there was an unjust cause. In 1966 her determination to take on the then New York Bell Telephone Company lead to a front page picturewith the Associated Press papers being affectionately known as Granny with the gun while winning her case to stop the cable lines from interfering with her property. She enjoyed cooking, baking and working in her flower garden.Friends, neighbors and strangers would stop by to admire the pristine flower beds.To those who knew herthey will remember her as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a true friend She will be dearly missed. Surviving are two sons, John A. Gallo of Ridgefield, NJ, and Philip Gallo and his wife Diana of Canton, a daughter Lydia Prospero of Cape Coral, FL two granddaughters, Dawn Shevlin and her husband Edward, Dina Kelm and her husband Robert, one great-grandson Rocco Rain Kelm, several nieces and nephews. Entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse, will be private. There are no calling hours.
