Obituary

HERKIMER - Dr. Beatrice Hagen, who served as president of Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis from 1980-1992, died April 8, 2005, at Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer, after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Hagen was the first women to serve as president of a chiropractor college. She was 86 years old. Born in Rome N.Y., on March 3,1919, to Elmer and Arabella Boyson, Dr. Hagen became one of the nation's most celebrated chiropractors. She was named a Fellow in the International College of Chiropractors, as well as "Chiropractor of the Year" in 1982 by the American Chiropractic Association, and then again, in 1987 by "The American Chiropractor." From 1986 to 1988, she was president of the Council on Chiropractic Education, the national accrediting agency for Chiropractic. She also served as president of the New York State Auxiliary, as well as chairing several committees on the New York State Chiropractic Association. Dr. Hagen joined the Logan College Board of Trustees in 1972 and became chairperson of the board in 1977.She received her Doctor of Chiropractic in 1940 from Logan College, and went on to become an instructor and clinical director at the college. She met her husband, Otto Hagen, at Logan, while she was a teacher and he was a student who had returned from military service in World War II.Dr. Hagen resided in Frankfort, from 1959 to 1980, where she and her late husband, shared one of the best-kwon chiropractic practices in New York, and where they raised four children.Dr. Hagen is survived by three of her children: Karen Bromley and husband Alan, of New York City; Kurt Hagen and his wife Valerie, of Herkimer, and Kris Hagen and his wife Teri, of Utica; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and her sister, Jane Curtis, of Cooperstown, and brothers Bert Boyson, of Old Forge, and Herbert and Elmer Boyson, both residing in Texas.Her daughter Kim Hagen, formerly of Utica, predeceased her on Dec. 25, 2004.Funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Herkimer Reformed Church, North Main Street, Herkimer. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends and relatives on Sunday April 10, from 4 until 8 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
