HERKIMER - Bertha E. "Bert" Brooks, 87, of 62 E. Main St., Mohawk, formerly of Church Street, Herkimer, passed away quietly Monday night, Dec. 30, 2002, in Valley Health Services Inc.She was born in Gloversville May 27, 1915, the third daughter of Henry B. and Bertha Kunstler Brooks.
Bert was educated in Gloversville schools and graduated as valedictorian of her senior class in high school. She received her bachelor's degree from Geneseo State University and a master's degree in library science from the same institution; she also took courses at Syracuse University.
Miss Brooks taught seventh grade English in Herkimer from 1937 until 1959, when she became a librarian. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1977. Bert was a past matron of Myrtle Chapter 148 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Evening Star Valley Chapter 82 in Ilion. She had served as president of the Herkimer Girl Scout Council and was a past board member of the Mohawk Homestead.
Surviving are her brother, Richard B. Brooks and his wife Elizabeth of Salisbury, Md.; a brother-in-law, John P. Little of Hampton, N.H.; five nephews and their families, Dr. Craig and his wife Elaine Little of Cortland, Drs. Brian and Pam Little of Wilmington, Del., Dr. Christopher and his wife Margaret Brooks of St. Louis, Mo., Drs. Jeffery Brooks and Ann Rosoff of Andover, Mass., and Nathaniel and his wife Elizabeth Brooks of Winchester, Mass.; as well as grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides her parents two sisters, Ruth Brooks and Dorothy Brooks Little, predeceased her.
A graveside memorial service will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, at a later date.
