Obituary

ILION - Bertha F. Mahardy, 82, of West Main Street, formerly of Mohawk, entered into eternal rest Saturday morning, May 10, 2003, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born July 19, 1920, in Mohawk, daughter of the late Bruce and Flossie Hazel Innes. A lifelong area resident, she was educated in Mohawk schools. On Sept. 23, 1937, she married Mark W. Mahardy in Ilion, a loving and devoted union of 58 years until his passing June 4, 1996. Mrs. Mahardy had worked as a presser in various dress manufacturing companies in Mohawk and Richfield Springs. She retired in 1986.Bertha had a strong belief in God and was of the Catholic faith. Her leisure time was spent doing crossword puzzles. When her husband was alive, they enjoyed camping and fishing together. She was a friend to many and will be missed by her friends and family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.Surviving are one son, William and his wife Alice Mahardy of Richfield Springs; a daughter, Elaine and her husband Eugene Emrich of Ilion; two brothers-in-law, John and his wife Kay Mahardy of Central Square and Theodore (Ted) Bahry of Herkimer; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and her faithful dog, Katie.Besides her parents and husband, Mark, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Innes; four sisters, Mildred Bahry, Nella Dibble, Evelyn Edick and Hazel Clark.Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, will officiate. Mrs. Mahardy will be laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
