EAST HERKIMER-Betty V. Harter, age 72, of Folts Road, passed away on Sunday morning June 10, 2007 in St Lukes Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born on March 13, 1935, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Melvin and Martha Maria Bayer VanDelinder. A lifelong Herkimer resident she was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1952. From 1952 until 1955, Betty worked as the news editor for the Herkimer Evening Telegram.
On December 31, 1954 she was united in marriage with William J. Harter in the Herkimer Reformed Church. They made their home in East Herkimer where they raised their three daughters.
In 1973 she went back to work in the Herkimer Central School system as Principals Secretary starting at Foley Junior High School followed by Bills Elementary School and later retiring from Herkimer Elementary School in 1997.
Mrs. Harter had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church Herkimer. Being blessed with exceptional musical talent, she served as the church Choir Director and Organist for the past forty-five years. She was also a member and officer of the Henderson Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
For her family the years hold precious memories of a caring, loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be truly missed.
Surviving are her husband of fifty-two years William, three daughters and their husbands, Martha Ellen and Tim DuMont of Utica, Anna Louise and Arthur Kozakowski of Herkimer, Deborah Lee and Herb VanHouten of Dexter, four sisters, Carol Stack of Rome, Lois Wright of Olympia, WA, Jean Mesick of Herkimer, Martha Meszler of Mohawk, one brother Lee VanDelinder and his wife Donna of Seneca Falls, eight grandchildren, David and Matthew Kozakowski both of Jersey City, NJ, Jason DuMont of Chicago, IL, Michelle Rodgers of Indianapolis, IN, Jackie DuMont of Utica, Allyson, William and Andrew VanHouten all of Dexter, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Carl VanDelinder.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10:00 am in the First Baptist Church Herkimer. The Reverend Patti Lawrence, Pastor and the Reverend David Kirkpatrick, Pastor Emeritus will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 until 9:00 pm.
