Betty A. Miller, 97, of East Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, June 20, 2026, at Little Falls Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born September 28, 1928, in Herkimer, Betty was the daughter of the late Henry and Clarice (La Celle) Barnum. She was raised and educated in Herkimer and graduated Herkimer High School.
On September 2, 1950, Betty married Ervin Miller at St. Francis De Sales Church in Herkimer. Ervin passed away on May 2, 1983, after a courageous battle with cancer. Together they shared 33 years of marriage and raised five sons: Wayne, Mark, Gerald, and their two sons Jeffrey and Dennis, who were tragically killed in a car accident at the ages of 17 and 5.
In her younger years, Betty worked at Standard Furniture in Herkimer and Fibers in Little Falls. She later found great fulfillment volunteering for many years at the local food pantry. Above all, she cherished her roles as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. After Ervin’s passing, she enjoyed traveling with senior groups from Mohawk. She was a longtime member of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post #25 in Mohawk and the former Moose Lodge in Ilion.
Betty is survived by her three sons: Wayne (Cheryl) Miller of Sandy Creek, NY; Gerald (Susan) Miller of Newport, NY; and Mark Miller of East Herkimer, with whom she resided. She is also survived by three grandsons (Dennis, Jeff, and Joe), two granddaughters (Heather and Clarice), one great-granddaughter (Lea), four great-grandsons (Colt, Alex, Owen, and Ian), and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ervin, three sisters (Elva Kneewasser, Beatrice Barnum, and Bertha Carny), and one brother (Joseph Barnum).
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Francis De Sales Church, 219 North Bellinger Street, Herkimer, NY. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, West German Street, Herkimer, where Betty will be laid to rest beside her husband and sons. Following the burial, family and friends are invited to continue the celebration of Betty’s life at the Polish Community Home, 319 South Washington Street, Herkimer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, NY.
