RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Beulah Houghtaling Powerly, age 93, of West James Street, passed away on Friday morning, June 22, 2007, in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica.
She was born on June 25, 1913, in Binghamton, daughter of the late Robert and Mabel Conklin Horton. She was raised in Morris and was educated in Morris Public Schools. On December10, 1930, she was united in marriage with Hugh Foote Houghtaling in the Morris Universalist Church Parsonage. They spent a loving and devoted union of fifty-one years in Richfield Springs. Mr. Houghtaling predeceased her in July of 1981.
After her family was grown, Beulah held various clerical positions. For six years she worked for the Ed Kitt Pharmacy in Richfield Springs but her most rewarding career years were the twenty that she worked at the Farmers Museum in Cooperstown. While there, she learned the art of hand spinning wool and was always available to give demonstrations.
After her retirement in 1982, Beulah spent her winters in Florida, where she met and married John Powerly who is now deceased.
A sincerely spiritual person, Beulah was a communicant of Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs where she had served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the Women of Saint Johns and participated in many church activities. She was also a member of the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens where she had served as secretary and a member of the New York State Historical Association.
Beulah was a woman who looked for the best in everyone she met. She will be missed by her many friends and family especially grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving her are a daughter, Jean Day Rubin and her husband Saul of Green Valley, AZ, two sons, James N. Houghtaling of Hinkley, John D. Houghtaling of Richfield Springs and Florida, three grandchildren, Cindy Normandeau of Sierra Vista, AZ, William Day of Nyack, Chad Houghtaling of Wichita, KS, three great grandchildren, two sisters, a brother, several nieces and nephews.
Burial Office and Holy Communion will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 am in Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Dixon Bartle, Rector will officiate. Interment in Springfield Center Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to the Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, the Richfield Springs Public Library or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the church. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
