HERKIMER - Carl Nehl, 85, of 104 N. Washington St., passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 17, 2001, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
He was born Nov. 15, 1915, in New York City, son of the late Herman and Anna Frederick Nehl. Mr. Nehl was raised and educated in New York City public schools. On Oct. 25, 1941, he married Catherine Sauer in New York, a loving and devoted union of 47 years until her passing on Feb. 28, 1989. An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater. In 1949, he joined the New York City Police Department, retiring in 1963 with the rank of sergeant. In 1964, he and his family moved to Rome where he worked in security for Griffiss Air Force Base, retiring in 1977. He came to Herkimer in 1997. Carl was happiest when he was surrounded by his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Children warmed up to him very easily and quickly. During his years with the police department he was affectionately known to the kids as Sergeant Nehl. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and in later years coin collecting and antiquing. Surviving him are three sons and their wives, Frederick and Linda Nehl of Las Vegas, Nev., Richard and Maureen Nehl of Waldorf, Md. and Stephen and Lisa Nehl of Herkimer; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. David Oertel, chaplain of the Folts Homes, will officiate. Interment will take place later this spring in Rome Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. Mr. Nehl's family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the nursing staff of Folts Homes for their compassion, patience and tender care during his stay.
