Obituary

HERKIMER-Carmen Ficili, age 82, of Mercury Lane, North Fort Myers, Florida and formerly of Williams Street, Herkimer passed away peacefully on Saturday morning August 7, 2010 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center,Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on November 18, 1927, in Gloversville, son of the late Anthony and Maria Stella Cassero Ficili. Carmen was raised in Gloversvilleand was a graduate of Gloversville High School. A US Army veteran he proudly served his country in Korea during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1951 attaining the rank of PFC. In August of 1950 he was united in marriage with the former Dolores Surace in her family home in Herkimer. The shared a loving and devoted union of thirty-eight years until her passing in 1988. For more than thirty years Mr. Ficili worked as a office manager for first Remington Rand and later UNIVAC in Utica, retiring in 1992. In 2003 he moved to North Fort Myers, FL but always returned to Herkimer at least once a year during the summer months. He had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer. Carmen will always be remembered as a man with a true sense of community. He was a life member of Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4915, Herkimer and the Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, camping and his many trips to Florida. His warm, caring and genuine personality will be greatly missed. He is survived by one sister, Angeline Ruggeri of Gloversville, his close companion of ten years Evie along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and many in-laws. Besides his parents and wife Dolores he was preceded in death by his son David Ficili in 1961, three brothers Salvatore Ficili, Joseph Ficili and Michael Ficili. Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer on Wednesday at 9:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am in the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer. The Reverend Thomas Lawless, Pastor will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Saint Judes Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post # 4915 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6:00 pm for services. Members of the Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm for ritualistic services.
