HERKIMER Carol Ann Cross, age 76, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Valley Health Service Inc. She had the comfort of knowing her loving niece Denise, nephews Danny and Doug were at her side . She was born May 21, 1941, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Alfred C. and Nellie E. Richard Gokey. A lifelong area resident she was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1959. On September 9, 1961, she married Dennis Cross in the First United Methodist Church Herkimer. They shared a devoted union of 55 years until his passing on January 19th of this year. She first worked at MDS in Herkimer then for over ten years at Cornell Cooperative, and for Herkimer Area Resouce Center. She worked with diligence and poured her love in everything she did, retiring as a case manager in 1998. Carol had many talents, however helping others and nurturing her family were her priorities She was active within the community for twelve years on the County Youth Advisory Board. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends and family. Family gatherings epecically the holidays are great memories to be cherished always. She will be remembered as a hard working, determined woman. If you were her friend you never doubted her loyality. She was always there to lend a helping hand. She will be missed. Surviving are a son and his wife David and Elyse of Norwalk Ct. two brothers, John Gokey and his wife Charlotte of Herkimer, Alfred Gokey of Mohawk, three grandchildren, Emily Mae Cross of Herkimer, Jackie Cross of Norwalk, Amanda Hopson of Little Falls, several devoted nieces, and nephews, Daniel and Tiffany Brown, and their children, Althea, Ameila and Arlo, Denise Brown, Douglas Brown, Cheryl Gokey, all of Herkimer, nephews John Gokey and companion Brandy Saeaver, and Brandon Gokey all of Mohawk, best friends, Faye and Fred Eicholzer of Herkimer. Besides her parents and husband Dennis, she was preceded in death by a son Michael on October 30, 2015 and her sister, Dorothy Brown on August 2, 1996. Funeral service will be on Thursday December 28th at 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Jill Farnham-US, Hospice Chaplain will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 7:00pm to receive relatives and friends. Interment in Mohawk Cemetery will take place next spring at a time to be announced. Memorial donation may be made to Multiple Sclerosis of CNY, PO Box 237, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
