MOHAWK-Catherine Joan Gloo, age 87, of Mohawk, passed away on Tuesday morning October 4, 2016, in Homelife at Folts Home in Herkimer. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on November 30, 1928, in Utica, daughter of the late Lynn F. and Grace Rich Farrell. A lifelong area resident, she was educated at St. Francis Regional School and graduated from Herkimer High School. She went on to Albany State Teachers College, where she received her degree in teaching. For two years Joan taught English in the Minoa School District, and substitute taught over the years at many area school districts. On June 28, 1952, she was united in marriage to Donald T. Gloo at St. Francis deSales Church, in Herkimer. They first made their home in Herkimer, and in 1958, moved to Mohawk. Mrs. Gloo had a strong faith in God and was a member of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, Herkimer, and Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Mrs. Gloos life was devoted to her husband and family. She was the strength that held them together in good times and sad. Cherished are those memories of the summers spent at Limekiln Lake and the closeness that they all shared. To all who knew Joan, she was a loving, caring, helpful person with an unforgettable smile. She was blessed with a strong sense of community and volunteered for fifteen years at the Stanley Theatre in Utica. She was an original volunteer for the Herkimer County Hospice and a member of the Herkimer County Historical Society. She also volunteered for Valley Helpers, Piece Maker Quilt Guild, Meals on Wheels, AIDS Community Resources of Utica and the Lupus Foundation of CNY.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 64 years, Donald; four sons, James Gloo of Saratoga Springs, Donald L. Gloo and his wife Julia Oas of Wind Point, WI, Theodore Gloo and his wife Mary of Canastota, Stephen Gloo and his wife Claudia of Herkimer; two daughters, Ellen Gloo of Maitland, FL, and Donna Gloo of Hampstead, NC; one sister Mary Jane Ruggero and her husband Robert of Endwell; seven grandchildren Madeleine and Sophia Gloo of Wind Point, WI, Timothy and Kelly Gloo of Canastota, Catie Marsh and her husband Geoffrey of Salisbury, NC, Aaron Gloo and his wife Veronica of Baldwinsville, Tyler Howd and his wife Jessica of Colorado Springs, CO; three great grandchildren Issac Gloo, Victor Gloo and Logan Howd; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Peter Gloo, on December 3, 1993.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends at Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Friday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 am at St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor , and Sister Mary Jo Tallman officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. The family also extends sincere thanks to the staff at Folts Home for their years of loving care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any of the above-named charities that Joan held dear.
