MOHAWK - Catherine A. Miles, age 87, of Walnut Street, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday afternoon April 5, 2005 in Valley Health Services Inc. Herkimer. She was born on March 19, 1918 in Mohawk daughter of the late James and Bertha Douglas Lynch. A lifelong Mohawk resident she was a graduate of Mohawk High School. On May 29, 1941 she was united in marriage to Alvin L. Miles in Ilion. A loving and devoted union of forty-eight years, Mr. Miles preceded her in death on January 19, 1990. Along with raising a family, Mrs. Miles had worked outside the home at the Remington Arms Company in Ilion, the Anderson Department Store in Mohawk, Montgomery Wards and W. T. Grant Store in Herkimer before going to work for the Mohawk Central School System. She retired from the school in 1980 after more than twenty-five years of service. She had a strong belief in God and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk and the church Rosary Society. Mrs. Miles was also a member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post #25 Ladies Auxiliary Mohawk. Catherine was a compassionate person who cared for her mother during illnesses, her husband during his final years and was one of the first kidney donors, giving her kidney to her daughter Eileen in 1967. She will be remembered for her willingness to help, her quick wit, her warm smile and the many road trips with her dear friend Katherine Johnson. She was a friend to many will never be forgotten. Surviving are a daughter, Eileen and her husband Thomas Phalen of Mohawk, one son, Lawrence A. and his wife Gail Miles of Catawissa, PA, four brothers, James and his wife Helen Lynch of Mohawk, Gerald Lynch of Oneida, Douglas Lynch of Mohawk, Donald and his wife Helen Lynch of Trophy Club, Texas, two grandchildren, Alyssa and Gregory Miles, a sister-in-law Mildred (Miles) Worden of East Frankfort, many nieces, nephews and several cousins. Besides her parents and husband Alvin three brothers, Edward, Robert and Francis Lynch, one sister Mary and her husband Richard Lyman, two sisters-in-law, Connie Lynch, Carol Lynch and a special niece, Susan Lynch predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 am in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk with the Reverend Mark Cunningham officiating. Following the Funeral Mass Mrs. Miles will be laid to rest with her husband in Mohawk Cemetery. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm.
