Obituary

HERKIMER-Charles E. Crandall Jr. 69, of North Main Street, passed away on Saturday February 3, 2001 in his home with his loving family at his side. He was born on November 1, 1931 in Herkimer, son of the late Charles E. and Catherine VanAlstyne Crandall. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School "Class of 1949" and attended Yale University graduating in 1953. On April 24, 1954 he married Mary Carswell in St. Francis deSales Church Herkimer. An honorably discharged US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served our country from 1953 to 1957, was commissioned Ensign in 1954 and had served three years on the USS Taconic attached to the Sixth Fleet in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Areas. He completed his service with the Naval Reserve in 1967 obtaining the rank of Naval Lieutenant Commander. Upon leaving active service he resumed his education at Albany Law School, graduating in 1962. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in December of that year. Returning to Herkimer he was associated with the Irving Basloe Law Firm until May 9,1966 when he started his own law practice. To all that knew him, he was an outgoing man who served to help others and he will not be forgotten. During the 1960's he was Assistant District Attorney for Herkimer County and was later appointed as Assistant County Attorney until his recent retirement. Over the years he was the Attorney for various municipalities in the Mohawk Valley. He was a member and past president of the Herkimer Bar Association, he had served as a member of the Herkimer Hospital Memorial Board of Managers from 1970 to 1983 and from 1974 to 1977 was Board President. Currently he was the Attorney for the Mohawk Homestead Advisory Board. He was a member of the Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E.. A member of Herkimer Lodge No. 423 F. & A.M., where he had served as Master in 1966, the Mohawk Valley Scottish Rite Club, Valley of Utica A.A.S.R. 32nd degree, the Ziyara Shrine, where he was Potentate in 1978, he was also Past President of the Mohawk Valley Shrine Club and a member of the Utica Court # 163 Royal Order of Jesters. He had a strong love for the out of doors and was an avid hunter. He was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church and a past member of its' Consistory. Surviving besides his wife of forty-six years, Mary are two sons and their wives, Charles E. III and Isabella Crandall, John H. and Debra Crandall all of Herkimer; two daughters, Susan A. Crandall of Ilion, Catherine Beth Crandall of Corning; seven grandchildren, Charles E. IV, Nicole, Shane, Ashley, Kyle , John H. Crandall Jr. and Sean all of Herkimer; four sister-in-laws, Anne Moller and her husband Daniel of Davisburg, MI, Helen Abrams and her husband Renny of Dover Plains, Lois Cassillo and her husband Joseph of Herkimer, Eleanor Carswell of Herkimer, three cousins Patricia Lucas and her husband Stuart of Rochelle Park, NJ, Kenneth Brown of Alva, OK, Sara Espy of Wilmington, DE, five nieces and fourteen nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Walter Carswell. Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Herkimer Reformed Church. The Reverend Donald Battjes pastor, The Reverend Fred Mueller former pastor, The Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor of St. Francis deSales Church Herkimer and the Reverend Monsignor Walter Donovan will officiate. Interment with full military honors will take place later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery at a time to be announced. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Monday (today) 4:00 to 9:00 PM. Members of Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E. are asked to meet at the funeral home for services at 7:00 PM on Monday evening and members of Herkimer Lodge # 423 F & AM at 8:30 PM for ritualistic services. Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church Building Fund or St. Francis de Sales School. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
