EAST HERKIMER-Charles Theodore Lowell age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday evening December 19, 2014 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on April 17, 1922 in the town of Herkimer, son of the late Raymond and Stella Tarbox Lowell. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. A proud World War II veteran, he answered the call of his country on February 3, 1942, joining the US Army Air Corps. During his time of service he received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars and five overseas service bars. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1945 attaining the rank of Tech/4. On October 26 1946 he was united in marriage with the former Ellen Catherine White in the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. They made their home and raised their family in East Herkimer. For over thirty-five years Mr. Lowell worked for the Chicago Pneumatic Company in Utica. He retired with the positon of Manager in 1985. Charles was a member of Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 B.P.O.E. and the East Herkimer Fish & Game Club. In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking and had built cabinets for many of his friends and relatives. To all who knew him he was a sincere gentleman with a quiet sense of humor and an unforgettable smile. He was happiest when he was surrounded by has many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be truly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Ellen, one son Charles A. Lowell of Albany, a daughter, Diane Collis and her husband Kenneth of East Herkimer, two grandchildren, Matthew Collis and his wife Kelly of East Herkimer, Sarah Ghiocel and her husband Scott of Albany, two great-grandchildren, Alex and Madelyn Collis, two brothers and their wives, Robert and Artie Lowell of East Herkimer, James and Gerry Lowell of the town of Herkimer, four sisters, Pearl Swart of New Jersey, Betty Boyer of East Herkimer, Frances Castilla and her husband Angelo of East Herkimer, Ellen Palmenteri and her husband Joe of Long Island, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion Taylor and Edna Reitz. Calling for Mr. Lowell will be on Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will follow immediately after at 7:00 pm in the funeral home with the Reverend Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment with military honors will be later next spring in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
