Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Charles E. Roberts Sr. "Pat" age 88 of State Highway # 28 passed away peacefully on Sunday evening March 15, 2015. He was born on March 17, 1927 in Richfield Springs, son of the late William Thomas and Dorothea Augermire Roberts. A lifelong area resident, he was educated in Richfield Springs Central School and graduated from Waterville High School. In 1945 he enlisted in the US Army where he was sent to Yale University to learn the Japanese language. He served our country during the occupation of Japan and later the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953. On Mach 13, 1949, he was united in marriage with the former Betty Pierce in the First Presbyterian Church, Richfield Springs. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-four years until her passing on December 9, 2003. For over twenty years Mr. Roberts worked as a machinist for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion. He Retired in 1990. To all who knew Pat, he was an active, good hearted man who throughout his life made many friends. He had a special place in his heart for Schuyler Lake where he was a volunteer Fire Fighter and a member of the Schuyler Lake Masonic Lodge. In his leisure time he was an avid bowler. He started bowling at the age of twelve and continued until just recently at eighty-seven years old. Remarkably he bowled in leagues on both Wednesday and Fridays. He enjoyed playing golf until he was eighty-one and had no trouble keeping up with the younger golfers. A man to be admired, he will be greatly missed by his many friends, family and his faithful dog Shorty. Surviving are one son, Charles E. Jr. and his wife Betty of Naugatuck, CT, three daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Jon Grogan, Peggy and Thomas Dziadik, Virginia and Randy Nabinger all of Richfield Springs, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews. Besides his parents and wife Betty he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Calling hours for Mr. Roberts will be on Wednesday (today) from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 am in the funeral home with the Reverend Doctor Mark Ioset, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs officiating. Interment with military honors will take place later this spring in the Schuyler Lake Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Susquehanna Valley ASPCA.
