Obituary

HERKIMER-Charles M. Sangster (Chuck) age 62, passed away unexpectedly on Friday evening January 6, 2012 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on May 17, 1949 in North Hampton, MA, son of the late Locklyn K. and Tressa Winslow Sangster. Chuck was raised and educated in Westfield, MA until his late teens when his family moved to New York where he graduated from Holland Patent High School. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he proudly served with the 173rd and 82nd Airborne Division from 1965 until he was honorably discharged in 1971. Upon returning home from Vietnam he finished his education at SUNYIT where he received his graduate degree. In 1980 he met Donna Mullenax and on May 17, 1981 they were united in marriage in the Ilion United Methodist Church. They had celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary this past year. Throughout the years Mr. Sangster had worked as a auto mechanic, auto service manager and had taught auto mechanics at Herkimer B.O.C.E.S. Most recently he drove tractor trailer for the Wal-Mart Distribution Center out of Marcy. In his leisure time he was an avid history buff, particularly old war stories, military movies and delighted in quizzing his children every chance he got. Chuck will always be remembered as a true family man. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children camping, fishing and leading their Boy Scout Troops. He was always a proud dad basking in their accomplishments. Most of all the last twelve years brought him joy as the Poppie of his two precious grandsons, Kyle and Jack. He was a friend to everyone and will be greatly missed. Surviving are his devoted wife Donna, a daughter, Leslie Anne Sangster Nevills and her husband Jason of Herkimer, four sons, Christopher Winslow Sangster, Jason Leland Sangster, Heath Alan Sangster all of Holland Patent and Chad Robert Sangster of Herkimer, one sister, Sandra Sangster of Glens Falls, two beloved grandchildren, Kyle James Smith and Jack Logan Nevills and also including many extended family members who were close to his heart. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc, 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Tuesday from 3:00 until 6:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm in the funeral home with the Reverend Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls officiating. Interment with military honors will take place later this spring at a time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to MOVAC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
