Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Charles J. Scheffler Jr. age 73 of McKoons Road passed away on Tuesday afternoon December 23, 2014 in Bassett Medical Center. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on September 12, 1941 in Brooklyn, son of the late Charles J. Sr. and Madeline Mills Scheffler. Charles was raised in Queens and was educated in Richmond Hill High School. An honorably discharged US Army veteran he proudly served during the Berlin Crisis. After his military service, he moved to this area and started Chuck's Auto Body Repair on Route # 28 in Mohawk. He operated the auto body repair business for ten years. He later started Scheffler Enterprises on McKoons Road in Richfield Springs where he manufactured and sold concrete lawn ornaments. He ran that business for ten years and then went to work as a courier for Bassett Medical Center until he retired in 2000. On January 25, 1975 he was united in marriage to the former Rosemary Hauser in the town of Springfield. They made their home and raised their family in Richfield Springs. Mr. Scheffler was a parishioner of Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Richfield Springs. He was a member and past president of the Richfield Springs Lions Club and a member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post # 616. To all who knew him they will never forget a hard-working, honest businessman who maintained an unblemished work ethic. He was a friend to many and will be sorely missed. Surviving are his devoted wife of thirty-nine years Rosemary, a son, Charles J. Scheffler III and his wife Susanne Mower-Scheffler, one daughter, Stephanie Wood and her companion Cody Mayne all of Richfield Springs, five cherished grandchildren, Brandon and Derek Wood, Nicolle, Connor and Colton Scheffler, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Alexus Rose Wood and two sisters, Patricia Scheffler and Marion Galosso. The family will be present to receive friends and relatives on Saturday from 1:00 until 3:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. A funeral service will be on Saturday during the visiting hours at 2:30 pm. The Reverend Bernard Osei Ampong, pastor of the Saint Joseph Worker RC Church will officiate. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Special Care Unit and the Intensive Care Unit at Bassett Medical Center for the care and compassion shown to Charles and his entire family during this difficult time. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Saint Jude's Children's Hospital or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
