Obituary

HERKIMER-Charles Edward Sommer Chuck age 77 passed on Saturday afternoon March 11, 2017 in Albany Medical Center after a short illness. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on July 17, 1939 in Mohawk, son of the late Floyd Henry and Ruth Alma Vincent Sommer. A lifelong area resident he was educated in Mohawk Central School. On November 12, 1960 he was united in marriage to the former Judith Ann Miller in the Herkimer United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Fred Cotnam officiating. For thirty years, Chuck worked for UNIVAC in Ilion. After he retired from UNIVAC he worked for Don Reale, K-Mart and operated his own scrap collecting business. Mr. Sommer had a strong faith in God and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. He was also a member of the Michael S. Pliesick Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. The American Legion Post # 38 Herkimer Auxiliary and served as a volunteer for many years at the Herkimer Food Pantry. A real outdoorsman, his leisure time was spent camping at Black River and Black Lake where he found relaxation hunting and fishing. To all who knew him he will always be remembered as a honest, hardworking man. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point but you always felt his warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be sadly missed. He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-six years Judy, four sons, Mark Sommer and his wife Deborah of Herkimer, Robert Sommer and his companion Lori Latt of Cedarville, Bernie Sommer and his wife Becky of German Flatts, John Sommer and his wife Tracy of Mohawk, three daughters and their husbands, Sharie and Michael Wainwright of Herkimer, Danyel and John Everson of Mohawk, Rebecca and Scott Henkle of Yorkville, a sister Gertrude Bellinger of Ohio, nineteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Sommer. Calling hours for Mr. Sommer will be on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., Herkimer. Funeral service will follow immediately after at 7:00 pm in the funeral home. Interment will be later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer Food Pantry. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank Dr. Norman Freund and Dr. Handy, the Medical Staff at Little Falls Hospital, the Doctors and Nurses at the Albany Medical Center D-3 Intensive Care Unit for the care and compassion shown to both Charles and his family.
