ILION - Chester J. Gregg, 76, of Catherine Street, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in St. Luke's Medical Center, New Hartford.
He was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Abramsville, Pa., son of the late Arno and Ethel Eldred Gregg. A lifelong area resident, he was education in Ilion schools. An honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during the Korean War. On Aug. 10, 1956, he married the former Louise Virginia Giachetti in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer, a loving and devoted union of 42 years. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1998.Mr. Gregg studied stained glass art in Albany, then joined his father in the family-owned and operated Gregg's Stained Glass Studio in Herkimer. Chester took over the business from his father in 1955. He earned a reputation for his artistic abilities and craftsmanship in the many churches he worked for throughout the country. He retired in 1977. All who knew him will remember his warm smile and caring manner. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.Surviving are his son, Chester and his wife Rebecca Gregg of Hinesville, Ga.; two sisters, Viola "Vicki" Gilbert of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Alice Crossway of Mohawk; many nieces and nephews, including James and Donald Gilbert, Sharon Fournier, Edward Gilbert, Debra Essert and Robert Crossway, along with several cousins.Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls, will officiate. Mr. Gregg will be laid to rest with his wife in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Herkimer.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m.Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the American Lung Association.
