HERKIMER - Clifford J. Carter, 96, formerly of 357 Gray Street, died on Wednesday morning, September 27, 2000 in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica.
Born on September 12, 1904 in Hopewell, VA, he was a son ofthe late Marcus and Russie Carter. He was raised and educated in Hopewell.Clifford was married three times, first to Edrie D. Rhodes on November 26, 1924,in Minoa, NY, a loving union of nearly 40 years until her passing on September25, 1964. On April 18, 1965 he married Arlene Waterman Carter in Herkimer. Shepassed away on October 20, 1973. His third marriage was to Mabel R. Vanderlinderon November 16, 1974 in the First Baptist Church Herkimer. A devoted union ofover twenty-four years. She preceded him in death on April 5, 1999.
Mr. Carter came to Herkimer in March of 1926 coming fromConcord, NC. He joined the village of Herkimer Fire Department in October of1930, and for thriteen years was deputy fire chief until his retirement inSeptember 1966.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church Herkimer, andformer member of Herkimer Lodge #423 F&AM.
Surviving him are two stepchildren, Eugene Carter and DorothyJoanne Tice both of Portland, OR; two nieces Lois Sheffield, Mildred Collinsboth of Concord, NC; four nephews, Boyd and Rudolf Blackwelder of Gastonia, SCand William Blackwelder of Mt. Pleasant, NC. He was preceded in death by abrother Robert Carter and a sister Eunice Blackwelder.
Services will be on Friday at 3:30p.m. in Fenner Funeral HomeInc., with the Reverend Jeremy Spencer, pastor of the First Baptist ChurchHerkimer officiating. Interment will follow in Newport Cemetery. The family willbe present to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 1-3 p.m. Memorialdonation may be made to the First Baptist Church Herkimer. Envelopes will beavailable at the funeral home.
