SPRINGFIELD CENTER - Clyde Floyd Matteson passed away on October 16, 2013 at home, surrounded by his loved ones.Clyde was born in New Berlin, NY on December 13, 1934 to Clyde Floyd and Margaret Elizabeth Matteson.He was the youngest of eight children. Clyde was a very industrious and hard-working young man, growing up on the familys dairy farm. When his father took ill in 1953, Clyde took over the responsibilities of working the farm. He would continue building up and improving the family farm for the next twenty-four years.Clyde then went on to serve the New Berlin community as a rural mail carrier for thirty years. Clyde had his first blind date with Florence Mae Turnbull to a drive-in movie in August of 1955. The two were married less than a year later on June 22, 1956.Clyde and Florence enjoyed their own very special love story for 57 years. They were each others best friend. They worked side-by-side in every adventure life brought their way, and continued to be over the moon for each other.Clyde and Florence were blessed with three childrenCindy, Jim, and Jeanne. Daughter Cindy was predeceased in 1993. He loved his children dearly, and he did anything he could to help and serve them.He also loved and enjoyed visiting with his grandchildren, Kelly, Kari, Krista, Kim, Matt, Josh, Little Jim, Jeremiah, and Elijahand his great grandchildren, Isaiah, Ella, Koda, Logan, Jennadee, Gabriella, Caden, Liam, Markie and Hannah.Not to be forgotten were two special grand-pups he always enjoyed visits from, Ty and Addie. Clyde loved the outdoors. An avid sportsman, he hunted deer, turkey, elk, moose, and over the years he also enjoyed fishing.He loved to hunt, whether in his own woods or traveling on numerous hunting/fishing trips to Newfoundland, Colorado, and Montana. He especially enjoyed clamming on Long Island. When he wasnt hunting or fishing, he enjoyed time walking in the woods with Florence, trapping, gathering ginseng, trimming Christmas trees on their tree farm, cutting wood, and gathering sap for the maple syrup business he ran with his wife. He and Florence were blessed to enjoy wonderful times together as they traveled to Alaska, Montana, Maine, Vermont, and Missouri.Clyde knew every back road for multiple counties around, and he and Florence enjoyed getting out and taking rides. In 2002 Clyde and Florence began a new phase of retired life as they moved to Springfield Center. They enjoyed immensely their newly found friendships there. With friends in the local Spring-Star Leatherstocking Seniors group, they enjoyed monthly gatherings, went on trips, attended the Glimmerglass Opera, had a Pitch card-playing group, and celebrated many birthdays together. Clyde loved to take others out on Otsego Lake to fish. Clyde had a special, warm way about him.With his twinkling eyes, ready smile, and engaging ways he instantly put people at ease.He left an indelible mark in our hearts and he will be dearly missed until we meet again. Open calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 19th from 10 am to 12 pm at the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James Street, Richfield Springs. There will be a private funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clydes memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Dialysis Unit at Bassett Hospital, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
