HERKIMER - Conrad C. Nielsen, age 91, of 104 North Washington Street and formerly of Dolgeville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, January 2, 2002 in Folts Home, Herkimer. He was born on April 14, 1910, in Denmark, son of the late Niels C. and Ida Johannsen Nielsen. Conrad came to America with his family when he was six years old where he lived in Troy and later the town of Fairfield. He was educated in both Troy and Fairfield public schools. For ten years, he worked as a messenger for the Western Union Company and then for the National Biscuit Company. On June 26, 1930, he married Rowena Thompson, of Fairfield and Herkimer; a devoted union of 54 years until her passing on December 23, 1984.
A licensed New York State Funeral Director, Mr. Nielsen was a graduate of Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse and subsequently was an instructor at the school. His wife, Rowena, was also a licensed funeral director and together established the Nielsen Funeral Home, in Dolgeville, which they operated until 1966. The business was sold to the Dryer family and later became the Buck Funeral Home. He was a member of the Little Falls Presbyterian Church, former member of the Dolgeville United Methodist Church, a past President and honorary member of the Tri-County Funeral Directors Association, a 50-year member of Dolgeville Lodge #796 F & AM, Valley of Utica Scottish Rite A.A.S.R., Ziyara Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. of Utica and the Salisbury Grange #596 where he had served as secretary.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Rodney and Dorothy Nielsen, of Northville, James and Ann Nielsen, of Leroy and Harry and Gabriel Nielsen, of Kingsbridge, VA; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will take place on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Wakeman Chapel of Folts Home with the Reverend David Oertel, Chaplain officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Salisbury Rural Cemetery. The family will be present in the Wakeman Chapel of Folts Home to receive relatives and friends Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Members of Dolgeville Lodge # 796 F & AM are asked to meet at Wakeman Chapel at 1:45 p.m. Saturday for ritualistic services.
