Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Cornelius J. Edick age 89 of State Highway # 28 passed away on Thursday morning April 12, 2012 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. He was born on August 24, 1922 in the town of Columbia, son of the late Cornelius, Sr., and Bertha Hopkins Edick. A lifelong area resident he was raised in Columbia and graduated from South Columbia High School. After graduating from high school he answered the call of his country by enlisting in the US Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was a recipient of the Asiatic Pacific-Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on February 6, 1946 attaining the rank of PFC. On August 25, 1953 he was united in marriage with the former Mildred Hadsell in Richfield Springs. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-five years until her passing on August 19, 1998. During his life time Mr. Edick had worked on various farms in the Richfield area but his primary work was a construction worker for local union # 35 Utica. He retired in 1986. Mr. Edick was a twenty-five year member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post #616. To all who knew him, they will never forget a kind, caring and down to earth man. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point but you always felt a true warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by a daughter Kay Strauss and her husband Michael of Del Rio, TN, one son Mark Edick and his companion Terri Norrbom of Richfield Springs, seven grandchildren, Matthew Edick and his wife Cathy of MI, Dianna Valdes and her husband Juan of Jacksonville, FL, Cody Edick of Ilion, Kaylyne Edick of Potsdam, Kelly Lowell and her husband Erik of Mohawk, Carly Edick and Jocelyn Edick both of Utica, six great grandchildren, Elijah Edick, Grace Edick, Adam Valdes, Juan Valdes, Rickey Valdes and Kevin Valdes, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Mildred he was preceded in death by his son Neil Edick in July of 2007 and eight brothers and sisters. Calling hours for Mr. Edick will be on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home; 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs, with a celebration of life beginning immediately after at 7:00 pm. Pastor Alan Miller will officiate. Interment with military honors will take place on Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
