Obituary

HERKIMER-Daryl E. Rocker age 58 of North Main Street passed away unexpectedly on Thursday April 27, 2006 in his home. He was born on March 17, 1948 in Boonville, son of the late Walter and Harriet Burdick Rocker. Daryl was raised and educated in Boonville. A Vietnam Veteran, on May 27, 1971 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as a Fire Protection Specialist. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1977 attaining the rank of Sergeant. Daryl had worked for radio station WLFH in Little Falls as a radio disc jockey going by the name of Big Jim Matthews until 1986. He has lived in Herkimer since 1991 coming from Frankfort. At one time he was married to the former Rose Currier of West Winfield. Daryl was a unique person. A familiar face on North Main Street he had a very positive way about him. To all those who knew him, he had an unforgettable smile that exuded a warmth and feeling of friendship whenever you talked with him. He was a giver and not a taker. With a strong belief in God he was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. It was there that he gave of his time and talent with the Christian Catering Committee, The Coffee House and helping in the church office. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter, during the days after September 11, 2001 he was noted for placing Red Cross canisters in various locations to help with disaster relief. He was a member of the Vietnam Vets, Disabled American Veterans Post # 162, volunteered as a driver for the Disabled Americans Veterans and a member of the Fort Herkimer Ham Radio Club. Daryl was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are two sons, Cory Rocker of West Winfield, Michael W. Rocker of Frankfort, a daughter, Christina Rocker of AZ, two brothers, Douglas and his wife Christina Rocker of AZ, Bruce Rocker of Iraq, five grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Debbie Rocker in 1996 and a daughter Brandi Rocker in 2000. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday evening at 8:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel James Jadick USAFR will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends two hours prior to the memorial service (6:00 to 8:00 pm). Interment with military honors provided by the United States Air Force will take place on Tuesday at 2:00 pm in Alder Creek Cemetery, Alder Creek, NY.
