David H. Gay, 75, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with his beloved wife, Laurie, by his side.

Born on May 24, 1951, in Ilion, New York, he was the son of the late William and Frances (Voorhees) Gay. David was raised and educated in Ilion. On September 22, 1980, he married Laurie Petteys in Remsen, New York; the couple shared nearly 46 years together.

For many years, David worked as a truck driver for Buanno Transportation in Fort Johnson, New York.

In his leisure time, David was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed online gaming with one of his closest friends, Terry Rivenburg. Most of all, he treasured the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

David is survived by his wife, Laurie; his children, Sherry Rose Gay of Herkimer, David Frances Gay and companion Jackie Patterson of Ilion, and April Gay of Ilion; his grandchildren, Aaron Wilson, Alex Yadow, Corey Gay, Edward Smith, Audrey Smith, Brianna Gay, Ava Gay, Chet Downs, Anthony Gay, Frank Arrigo, and Angie Arrigo; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Christina Gay; and his brothers, James Holbrook, George Gay, and Edward Gay.

In keeping with David’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. The Gay family is being cared for by Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, NY.
