Obituary

EAST HERKIMER-David Charles McManus age 73 passed away peacefully after a short illness on Sunday February 26, 2017 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side. Dave was born on May 28, 1943 in Herkimer son of the late Anselm (Red) and Gladys Gould McManus. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1962. A Veteran of the Vietnam War he entered the US Army on August 2, 1967 during that time he was the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense and Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 1, 1971 attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class. He then served for ten years locally with the Army National Guard. On May 15, 1971 he was united in marriage to the former Pamela Sue Collis in the Herkimer United Methodist Church. For 18 years he was employed by Mohawk Data Sciences before going to work at the New York State Department of Corrections (Mid-State Correctional) Marcy in 1988. He retired from Mid-State Correctional in 2008 after twenty years of dedicated service. Mr. McManus had a strong faith in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Herkimer. He was also a member of Michael S. Plesick VFW Post # 4915 Herkimer, Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 Mohawk, East Herkimer Fish and Game Club and the Herkimer Polish Club. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing and gardening. The McManus back yard was always abundant in beautiful flowers and many fresh vegetables. To all who knew him he affectionately nick-named Homer to some and Mr. Love Bug to others but whatever the nick-name he was loved and respected by all. He will always be remembered as a hard-working man, with a great sense of humor who was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren. He will be sadly missed. Surviving him are his devoted wife of forty-five years Pamela, three sons, Chad A. McManus and Melissa Twitchell of Ilion, David McManus and his wife Kristen of Herkimer, James McManus and his wife Cynthia of Mohawk, one sister, Donna McManus of Manhattan, six grandchildren, Amanda Brown, Bryan McGuire, Brittany McManus, Travis Young, Kaitlyn Duesler and Alyssa Duesler, two nephews, DJ (Dick) Jones and his wife Jennifer, Dan Jones and his wife Tina, many cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his in-laws Don and Mary Collis and grandson Jared D. McManus in December of 2016. Calling hours for Mr. McManus will be on Sunday from 12 noon to 3:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will follow on Sunday at 5:00 pm. Interment with military honors provided the US Army will be later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to thank St. Elizabeths ICU team and staff for their compassionate care to Dave and to our loving family and friends our sincere thank you for reaching out and being there for us during this difficult time.
