Obituary

HERKIMER-Delila Allen age 87 of Douglas Avenue entered into eternal rest on Saturday evening June 14, 2003 in Faxton Hospital, Utica. She was born on February 20, 1916 in Herkimer daughter of the late George and Delila Blair Howard. A lifelong Herkimer resident she was a graduate of Herkimer High School. On June 20, 1938 she married Ira Hampton Allen in the First Baptist Church Herkimer. A loving and devoted union of forty-five years Mr. Allen preceded her in death on August 31, 1983. For thirty-one years Mrs. Allen worked for the G.H. Munger Department Store, Herkimer, retiring as a Department Manager in 1976. She had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Herkimer where she had served on the Church Board of Deacons. She was a fifty year member of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 Order of the Eastern Star and at one time a member and officer of Foot Hills Girl Scout Council. To all that knew her they will remember her warm smile and friendly manner. Surviving are a cousin, Beverly Gillette of Schuyler, a sister-in-law, Sarah Howard of Herkimer, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Ira one brother, George Howard and three sisters, Ethel Peters, Mildred Hiller and Ann Rando, predeceased her. Delilas family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Thursday from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Her funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with the Reverend Patricia Lawrence, Pastor of the First Baptist Church Herkimer and the Reverend David Kirkpatrick, Chaplain of the Masonic Home, Utica officiating. Mrs. Allen will be laid to rest next to her husband in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Baptist Church, Herkimer Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Nursing staff and Aides of the third floor at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home for their care and compassion during Delilas stay at the nursing home. The Herkimer Senior Citizens will meet in the funeral home for a prayer service at 11:30am on Thursday.
