HERKIMER - Dennis Cross, age 75 passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2017, at St. Lukes Nursing Home, New Hartford. He was born on October 15, 1941, son of the late Richard and Edna Mills Cross. A lifelong area resident he was a 1959 graduate of Mohawk Central School. On September 9, 1961, he married the former Carol Ann Gokey in the United Methodist Church. For over 36 years he worked as a machinist for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company. While employed with the company he continually studied to improve his skills, including courses with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and Maynard Management Institute for advanced Computer Systems. For many years he was Chief Steward of I.A.M Union and Past President of the Credit Union. He retired in 1998. He found his peace and tranquility in nature with all its beauty large and small. He enjoyed Astronomy, painting with oils, and golfing. Dennis was a Civil War History buff, and an avid Yankee and Jets fan. Dennis was the patriarch of the family and his dear friend Ruth Gokey was the matriarch, who the family lost in 2014. Holiday gatherings at the home with Denny playing Santa or playing pitch will always be cherished by family and friends. He will always be remembered as a dependable man who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he loved. Surviving are his wife of 55 years Carol, a son, David Cross and his wife Elyse of Norwalk, Ct. a brother, Alan Cross and his wife Bettie of Winston Salem, NC, a sister-in-law Kitty Cross of Oklahoma, two grandchildren, Emily Mae Cross of Herkimer, Jackie Cross of Norwalk, CT, step-granddaughter Amanda Hopson of Little Falls, several nieces and nephews including Daniel and Tiffany Brown, Denise Brown, and Douglas Brown all of Herkimer, John Gokey Jr. of Mohawk, Lisa Cross of Ilion, Jeffrey Cross, son of Alan Cross of GA, and Jeffrey Cross, son of Ronald Cross, of Oklahoma and brothersin-law John Gokey and his wife Charlotte and Alfred Gokey all of Herkimer, cousin Cheryl Gokey, of Herkimer, special friends Faye and Fred Eichholzer of Herkimer/Florida. Beside his parents he was preceded in death by a son Michael Cross in 2015, a brother, Ronald Cross, sister-in-law Dorothy Brown, nephew Eric Cross and cousin Barbara Perkins. Calling hours will be in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Wednesday January 25th from 4:00 until 6:00 pm with a funeral service to follow at 6:00 pm. Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment will take place later this spring in Mohawk Cemetery. The family would like to extend gratitude to all the staff at St. Lukes Home who cared for Dennis during his stay. Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Central NY.
