Obituary

HERKIMER Dennis R. Sagaas, age 68 of Church Street passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning April 7, 2010 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family by his side at the time of his passing. Dennis was born on May 22, 1941 in Englewood, New Jersey, the son of the late dd Martin and Rose Schmidt Sagaas. He was raised and educated in Hackensack, New Jersey. After graduating high school in 1959 he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Robert H. McCard before being honorably discharged in 1963, and then serving with the Naval Reserve until 1965. In 1984, Dennis enlisted with the New York Air National Guard and served with the 174th Tactical Fighter Wing in Syracuseuntil being discharged in 2001. He was especially proud of his service in Operation Desert Storm. Dennis was Vice President of Enjems, Inc., a floorcovering subcontractor, for 30 years, and he continued to work as a self-employed estimator. On January 3, 1970, Dennis was united in marriage with Matlida Mattie Enjem in AnnunciationChurch, Ilion, a blessed union of 40 years. Besides serving his country, Dennis served his community in many ways. He was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church, serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School Program and as a Sunday School Teacher. He was a Past President of the Herkimer Rotary Club, and a member of the Herkimer County Habitat for Humanity Program. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Surviving him are his beloved wife, Mattie; two sons: Leif and his wife, Maura, of Albany; Christopher and his wife, Ann, of Albany; a daughter, Corey Rose Sagaas of Utica; a brother, William Francone, Jr. and his wife, Jackie of Warwick, NY; two sisters: Rosemary Francone and her companion, Tim Kooker of Doylestown, PA; Denise Malsky and her husband, Edward of Kinnelon, NJ; two grandchildren, Maisie Rose McCann Sagaas and Pearse Martin Sagaas; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Rose Enjem; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Dennis was a friend to many and he will never be forgotten. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 10th at 10:00 am in the Herkimer Reformed Church with the Reverend Mark Andersen officiating. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Friday, April 9th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to MOVAC, Herkimer County Habitat for Humanity, or the Wounded Warrior Project. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
