RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Donald P. Astheimer age 69of State Route #28, town of Richfield passed away unexpectedly on Saturdayevening May 25, 2002 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born on May 23, 1933 in Jersey City, NJson of the late Henry R. and Florence Perrine Astheimer. Don was raised in NewJersey and was a graduate of Plainfield High School.
An honorably discharged US Navy veteran heserved on the USS Cabot and the USS Tarawa during the Korean Conflict.
On May 3, 1958 he married the former JoyceGarretson in Stillwater, NJ.
For many years he worked as a plumber and inthe construction trade. In 1995 he and his wife came to Richfield Springs. Heworked for the town of Richfield in the winter as a wingman on the snowplows.During the summer month's he worked for the Village of Richfield Springs asgrounds keeper at the Lakeview Cemetery.
He was a member of the Plainfield RescueSquad, a volunteer fire fighter for both Stillwater and Hartwick Seminary andwas a member of the Richfield Springs Lions Club. A Free and Accepted Mason hebelonged to Lodges in both New Hampshire and Cooperstown #138. In his leisure time heloved to play golf.
Don was happiest when he was surrounded by hisfriends and family especially his granddaughter "Katie".
Surviving besides his loving wife offorty-four years Joyce are two daughters and their husbands; Karen and MartinField of Cherry Valley, Leigh and Christopher Hutchinson of Boston, MA, abrother; Robert and his wife Vivian Astheimer of Palm Coast, FL, hisgranddaughter; Katherine Hutchinson of Boston, MA, several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at2:00 PM in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. The Reverend WilliamHarkins, Pastor will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to the RichfieldSprings Lions Club or the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopeswill be available at the church. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrathFuneral Home, Richfield Springs.
