HERKIMER-Donald H. Bellinger age 91 passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 26, 2017 at the Masonic Care Community, Utica. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side. Donald was born on June 27, 1926 in Herkimer, son of the late Russell Erwin and Frances Phillips Bellinger. He was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. On December 1, 1944 he joined the US Army Air Corps Cadet Program. A World War II veteran, he was assigned to the Air Transport Command on Kwajalein, Operation Crossroads; the Atomic Test on Bikini. He was honorably discharged from the US Army Air Corps on August 8, 1946. After his military service he attended Mohawk Community College and was a graduate of Bliss Electrical School in Washington D.C. He worked as a Project Engineer at Remington Rand (UNIVAC) in Ilion and later worked as a switching technician for the New York Telephone Company. He retired after 31 years of service.
On March 1953 he was united in marriage to the former Jane McKennan in the Herkimer Reformed Church. The Reverend J. Foster Welwood officiated. For fifty-six years they made their home at Fall Hill in Little Falls before moving to Acacia Village, in 2009.
An ardent aviation enthusiast, Don started flying in 1943 at the Marcy Airport. He earned his private commercial pilots license for single engine aircraft for both land and sea. Mr. Bellinger had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church for over sixty-five years. He was a member of Olive Branch Lodge #40 Free and Accepted Masons, the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25, Mohawk, the Telephone Pioneers, The Quiet Birdmen, the Little Falls Municipal Golf Course, and a life member of the Herkimer County Historical Society. To all who knew him he a good natured man with a great sense of humor and unforgettable smile. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-four years Jane, a son Russell Bellinger and his wife Kathleen Lawrence Bellinger of Weeki Wachee, FL, and a daughter Donna Fredlund of Albany. Don had five grandchildren: Katherine Lea Fredlund, MD of Cary, NC, Kurt Henry Fredlund and his wife Raman Kaler of San Jose, CA, Karissa, Jenna and Russell Bellinger of Weeki Wachee, FL and three great-grandchildren: Vander Henry and Raiya Kaler Fredlund of San Jose, CA, and Sadie Rae Bellinger of Weeki Wachee, FL.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Saturday September 30th from 1:00 until 3:00 pm. Members of Olive Branch Lodge #40 F&AM are asked to meet at the Funeral Home on Saturday at 3:00 pm for ritualistic services. Interment with military honors will take place at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer Reformed Church or the Herkimer County Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
