Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Donald Wesley Berrie, age 93, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday April 22, 2015 in his home. He was born on August 31, 1921 in Gloversville, son of the late Alexander and Mabel Weaver Berrie. A lifelong area resident, he was raised and educated in West Winfield. He first worked for the leather tannery in West Winfield before answering the call of his country by joining the US Army in World War II. He served as a Medium Crew Man with the 748th Rhino Tank Division under General George S. Patton Jr's. Third Army. He fought in the Aedennes, Central Europe, Northern France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Luxemburg, Austria and the Rhineland. He received the EAME Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Don's proudest possession from the war was the letter he received from General Patton himself, thanking Don and his fellow soldiers for their efforts, achievements and valor during the war. He was honorably discharged on December 3, 1945 attaining the rank of T-5. On April 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Ida Snyder in the Richfield Springs Presbyterian Church. They shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-seven years until her passing on May 5th, 2013. During his time at the Leather Tannery in West Winfield, because of his love for woodworking , he also enjoyed making gunstocks for Hosford's in Richfield Springs. For twenty-one years Mr. Berrie also worked as a color chemist for the Duofold Company in Mohawk, retiring in 1984. Donald was an active member of Richfield Springs American Legion Post # 616, and also a member of the Richfield Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed traveling, and had traveled with his wife up and down the east coast, and enjoyed a once in a lifetime trip to Europe. To those who knew him, he was a caring and humble man who was a true example of the greatest generation. He also thoroughly enjoyed any time that he got to spend with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Surviving him are one son, Michael Berrie and his wife Marge of Mohawk, a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Warner and her husband John of Ilion, eight grandchildren; Michelle Platt, Joshua Berrie, Sean Berrie, Kaylan Warner, Lacey Warner, Krista Goldsmith, Bill Goldsmith, and LinDee Douglas. Ten great-grandchildren; Alexandria Platt, Spencer Platt, Mikayla Comes, Leah Comes, Ronnie Pizer, Trenton, Amber and Lexi Douglas, Gavin and Garrett Goldsmith, several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a great friend, Don Osborne, who did so much for him, especially the last couple of years since Ida passed away. Besides his parents and wife Ida, he was preceded in death by a sister Delores Jones. At Mr. Berries' request, funeral service and interment are private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
