Obituary

HERKIMER - Donald Ellsworth Brown, age 85, of Henry Street, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, July 2, 2008, in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.He was born on November 13, 1922, in Springfield, MA, the son of the late Marcus and Martha Fleming Brown. A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of Poland Central schools. During World War II he served with the US Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1946.On April 16, 1946, he was united in marriage with the former Jacqueline Manion. They have made their home in Herkimer since that time. For forty years Mr. Brown worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1985.Donald had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. He was a member of Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. He was also a member of Herkimer American Legion Post #38, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Herkimer Council Boy Scouts of America as well as a Cub Scout Pack Leader.To all who knew him they will remember a caring, warm-hearted gentle man. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.Surviving are his devoted wife of sixty-one years, Jacqueline; two sons, Daniel E. Brown of Hindale, NH, Patrick J. Brown and his wife, Robin, of Baldwinsville; four daughters, Donna Wrobel of Fairport, Christine Howell and her husband, Robert, of Canastota, Carolyn DeCoursey and her husband, William, of Herkimer, Kimberly Schrader and her husband, Rudolph, of Mohawk; two half-brothers, Douglas Brown and his wife, Jackie, of Clearwater, Fla., Mark Brown Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Granite Springs; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Michael F. Brown in 2004; his sister, Ruth Chrisman; and grandson, Michael Howell.Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend Mark Cunnigham, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4-7 p.m.Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Francis deSales Church, herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
