UTICA - Donald L. Martin, 91, of Acacia Village, formerly of Vickerman Hill Road, Mohawk, passed away Monday afternoon, Dec. 10, 2001, in Faxton Hospital, Utica.
He was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Vernon, son of the late Vernon and Carolyn Keiser Martin. Don was raised in Vernon and graduated from Vernon High School. He went on to graduate from Hamilton College and furthered his education with graduate studies at Syracuse University.
On June 2, 1938, he married Jeanette Breslin in Oneida. A mathematics teacher for 35 years, he taught school in Potsdam, Monticello, Mohawk and New Hartford Central School, retiring in 1968. He and his wife have resided at Acacia Village since 1995.
For over 50 years, Don has been a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory of the church and sang in the church choir. He was a member, past master and one-time treasurer of Mohawk Lodge 276 F&AM where he had received the Dedicated Service Award in 1984. He also belonged to the New York State Teachers Association, Herkimer County Retired Teachers Association, the Herkimer County Historical Society and the Glimmerglass Opera. He was a founding member of both the Benjamin F. Raymond Society of Potsdam College and the Joel Bristol Association of Hamilton College.
Don was a friend to all who met him and will be missed by many. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Jeanette; one daughter, Sonia Martin of Syracuse; a brother, James Vernon Martin of Vernon; one granddaughter, Michelle Boyer; four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Dorn and Mildred Allen.
Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Tomkins Chapel at the Masonic Home, Utica. The Rev. David Kirkpatrick, chaplain of the Masonic Home, will officiate. Interment will take place next spring in the Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls.
Members of Mohawk Lodge 276 F&AM are asked to meet at the chapel on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for ritualistic services.
Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer Reformed Church Memorial Fund or the Herkimer County Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral service.
