Obituary

MOHAWK - Donald A. Reardon, 76, of State Highway 28 south, entered into eternal rest on Saturday afternoon, May 21, 2005, in the Masonic Care Community, Utica. He was born June 5, 1928, in Mohawk, son of the late Alexander and Alberta Ludwig Reardon. A lifelong Mohawk resident, he was a graduate of Mohawk High School class of "1946." He furthered his education at Ithaca College, graduating in 1950 with a degree in music. An honorably discharged U.S. Air Force veteran, he served with the U.S. Air Force Band during the Korean War. On May 14, 1955, he married the former Doris Eberlein in the Mohawk United Methodist Church.In 1954, he started to work in the family business, Best Enterprises in Ilion, where he managed the hardware store until 1968. He then started his teaching career in music with the Mohawk Central School. He retired in 1984.Don had a strong belief in God and used his musical talents to serve him. He was church organist for the Mohawk United Methodist Church, the Plymouth Bethesda Church in Utica, the Christian Science Church in Clinton as well as many area nursing homes. He had a strong sense of community; he was a member of the Mohawk Community Club, Pack Leader of Pack 125 Mohawk Cub Scouts of America, Webloes leader and scout master of Mohawk Troop 125 Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of AARP and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. He had memberships in both Mohawk Valley Lodge 276 and Dolgeville Lodge 796 Free and Accepted Masons.Don will always be remembered as a caring and gentle man who will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Doris; two sons, Mark Reardon of Mohawk and Stephen and his wife Robin Reardon of Clarkston, Mich.; a brother, Robert and his wife Sally Reardon of Mohawk; three grandchildren, Katie Reardon of Albany, Kelsey and Brooke Reardon of Clarkston, Mich.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Reardon.Members of Mohawk Valley Lodge 276 F&AM and Dolgeville Lodge 796 F&AM will conduct ritualistic services on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Mohawk Reformed Church. A memorial service will follow with Kenneth Palmer officiating.The family will be present in the church to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service (2-3 p.m.). Interment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.As an alternative to sending flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Mohawk Reformed Church or the Masonic Care Community. Envelopes will be available at the church.Thank you to our sons, Betty Miller, sister Ellie Rugg and the staff of the Masonic Care Community for their care, support and compassion.
