RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Donald Vanderwey age 88 entered the gates of heaven to meet his Savior on Monday June 19, 2017 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on April 23, 1929 in Oosteburen, Friesland., son of the late Henry and Rena Schoelier Vanderwey. Donald was raised and educated in the Netherlands and with his family came to America first settling in Goshen, NY. Here he worked on a dairy farm before moving to Sussex, NJ where he farmed with his father for three years. On June 3, 1953 he was united in marriage to his soul mate the former Martha Sytsema in Sussex, New Jersey. They then moved to Augusta, NJ where for forty years, Mr. Vanderwey operated the Vanderwey Dairy Farm until his retirement from farming in 1992. He and his wife Martha moved to the Richfield Springs area and owned and operated Marthas Bed and Breakfast in the town of Columbia. Mr. Vanderwey had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs where he had served as a Church Elder for two terms. He also was a coordinator with the local Board of Elections. He enjoyed gardening, farming, his family and friends and most importantly he loved the Lord with all his heart. He will always be remembered for his joyful laughter and caring way. He will be truly missed.
Surviving are his devoted wife of sixty-four years Martha, three daughters and their husbands, Terri and Tom Visser of Grand Rapids, MI, Martha Jane and John Miedema of Sherrill, Renee and Scott Brink of Grand Haven, MI, a brother, John Vanderwey and his wife Joan of Jenesen, NJ, two sisters, Anna Viersma and her husband Wiebe of Gettysburg, PA, Jenny Oskamp of MD, six grandchildren, Jessica and Kendra Visser, Jonathan Miedema, Kristina Martin, Sarah Smith and Lisa Miedema, four great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Raymond Vanderwey and two sisters, Shirley Elgermas and Tina Dykstra.
The Vanderwey family will be present to meet relatives and friends on Thursday from 10:00 am until 1:00 PM in the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Main Street, Richfield Springs. A funeral service will follow immediately after at 1:00 Noon in the church with the Reverend Alan Arkema and David Arkema officiating. Interment will follow in the North Columbia Cemetery. Expressions sympathy may be made to the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, PO Box 868 Richfield Springs. Envelopes will be available at the church service. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
