EAST HERKIMER-Doris L. Bolen age 82 of Pine Grove Road entered into eternal rest on Monday morning July 14, 2003 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica.
She was born on July 10, 1921 in Detroit Michigan, daughter of the late Oscar and Sophie Friedman Latovsky. Doris was raised in Detroit and graduated high school there. During World War II she joined the Womens Army Corps and served overseas. Her medals and awards included the Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. On December 22, 1947 she married Clarence P. Bolen in San Diego, CA. A resident of East Herkimer since 1955, she and her husband moved here coming from Detroit.
Mrs. Bolen had worked as a bookkeeper first for the AMVETS in Detroit. Locally she had worked for Art Backing Company, Little Falls, General Electric Company, Utica, Remington Arms in Ilion, M. H. Brown Manufacturing Co. and for over ten years at the Herkimer Area Resource Center where she retired in 1986.
Mrs. Bolen was a member of the Sisterhood of the Temple Beth Joseph, Herkimer. She was proud of her memberships in Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25, Mohawk and the East Herkimer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 6531. Doris was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed being involved with kids. She at one time was president of the East Herkimer PTA and had served as a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts.
She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family especially her grandchildren and great granddaughter.
Beside her husband of fifty-five years Clarence, she is survived by two sons and their wives; Stephen and Rosemarie Bolen of Collins, Allen O. and Patricia Bolen of East Herkimer, four grandchildren; David Bolen of Brockport, Matthew Bolen of Collins, Allen and Daniel Bolen of East Herkimer, a great granddaughter; ChyAnne Bolen of East Herkimer, four brothers, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. A memorial service will take place at a later time. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of East Herkimer VFW Post # 6531 and Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday evening for ritualistic services at 7:30 pm.
