HERKIMER - Doris L. Fryer-Wissick, age 84, of 104 North Washington Street, formerly of State Highway #28 passed away on Wednesday morning, July 22, 2009, in Folts Homes, Herkimer. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
Doris was born on September 25, 1924 in Little Falls, daughter of the late Arthur E. and Jessie M. Pross Dygert. She was raised in Little Falls and was a graduate of Little Falls High School class of 1942 and at one time was married to Stanley E. Fryer.
On May 31, 1986 she was united in marriage with C. Nelson Wissick in the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer with the Reverend Walter Collins officiating. Together they shared a devoted union of twelve years until his passing on February 18, 1998.
A resident of Herkimer since 1955 she always worked in retail, first as the owner-operator of Fryer Foot Fashions in Herkimer and for twenty years as a salesperson for Freemans Drapery store, retiring in 1988.
Mrs. Wissick had a strong belief in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer where she had served on the church Vestry. Doris had a very real sense of community. She had served as Secretary of the Herkimer Memorial Hospital Guild, was a member and Past Matron of Rock City Chapter # 272 Order of the Eastern Star, Past Treasurer of Saint Marys Guild and a member of the Herkimer Lady Elks. In her leisure time she was an avid Bridge Player, Crosstitcher and Golfer.
Mrs. Wissick will always be remembered as a loving, caring and gracious lady who found enjoyment in doing for others. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. A friend to many, she will be greatly missed.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Lynn and Jack Fitzer of Ilion, Barbara and David Conover of Hadley, PA, step-children, Terrence and his wife Susan Wissick, Laurie and her husband Mark Markey of Newport, Wendi Wissick of Springfield, MA, ten grandchildren, Tracy Casanova, Jackie and her husband Christopher Bray, Jill and Andrew Schrader, Zane and Jessica Arbuckle, Amanda and Michael Veley, Aaron and Shannon Markey, ten great grandchildren, April, Amber, Carlie and Bree Casanova, Mattea and Will Schrader, Jacob, Bailey and Maggie Bray, Zoey Arbuckle and Collier Veley.
Besides her parents and husband C. Nelson Wissick she was preceded in death by her son Lance R. Fryer on October 19, 2004 and her brother Robert L. Dygert on April 30, 1993.
Funeral Service with Holy Eucharist will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment will take place at a later time convenient to the family. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm.
It was Mrs. Wissicks desire that expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations in support of Jill and Andy Schrader whose infant son and Doris great-grandson Will Schrader was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
