Obituary

SCHUYLER Doris E. Schuyler, 92 passed away on Sunday,September 23, 2012, at St. Lukes Medical Center after a lengthy illness with the comfort of her family at her side. The daughter of the late Robert M. and Lottie Amy (Carr) Elmendorf, she was born on January 26, 1920 in Amsterdam, NY. She graduated from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam in 1937 and from the Elinor School affiliated with the University of Buffalo. On January 26, 1941, she married William R. Schuyler, Sr., in the Dutch Reformed Church in Minaville, NY, a union of 52 years. Mrs. Schuyler was a teacher with Amsterdam School System for 35 years and later taught with the Broadalbin School District. She also was a past Executive Director of the American Cancer Society of Herkimer County. After retiring from teaching she began a career of writing and authored four books. Later she began a publishing business, Canal Side Publisher, and operated a bookstore, Schuyler Books located on the property of her home, Schuyler Hall, with her husband as well as speaking at schools and libraries to encourage others to become writers. She was active in the East Schuyler United Methodist Church and the East Schuyler Grange at the the Seventh Degree. Mrs. Schuyler enjoyed collecting, restoring and finishing antiques all of her life. She owned and operated an antique shop, Old Erie Gift Galleries, for a number of years with her father in Fultonville, NY. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout North American. She was a past member of Zonta as well as a member of the Ilion Historical Club. Surviving are her two sons, Robert G. Schuyler of Schuyler and John H. Schuyler of Frankfort, five grandchildren, Melinda S. Begley and her husband Daniel, William R. Schuyler, III and his wife Diane of Schenevus, Jeremiah T. Schuyler and his wife Rebecca of Newport, VT, Zachary J. Schuyler of Herkimer, and Jonathan H. Schuyler of Frankfort. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Madeline G. Schuyler of Schenevus, Susanne S. Begley of Little Falls, and Caleb Christian Schuyler of Newport, VT. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Schuyler was predeceased by her eldest son, William R. Schuyler, Jr. and grandchildren Christian A. Schuyler and Elizabeth M. Schuyler. Calling hours are from 4PM to 8PM on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at the Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, NY The funeral will be at 11AM on Wednesday, September,26, 2012 at the funeral home.
