Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Dorothy W. Ames, age 90, of U.S. Highway No. 20 passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2011, in The Plains at Parish Homestead, Oneonta.She was born on Nov. 18, 1921, on the family farm in Schuyler Lake, daughter of the late Carl J. and Grace Baker Wing. A lifelong area resident she was educated in Schuyler Lake Rural School and Richfield Springs High School where she graduated class valedictorian. Dorothy went on to SUNY Cobleskill and returned home to work as a bookkeeper for Beadle Chevrolet Automobile Dealership in Richfield Springs until 1946.On Oct. 19, 1946, she was united in marriage with Albert E. Ames in the Universalist Church, Schuyler Lake. They shared a blessed union of 62 years until his passing on March 5, 2009. Together they owned and operated the Ames Family Dairy Farm in Richfield Springs for over 50 years. Mrs. Ames was active in the Monticello Grange and the Dairy League.Dorothy had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, where she had served as church secretary and treasurer. In her leisure time she loved doing needlework and was an avid collector of Clappsaddle Post Cards.To all who knew her, they will never forget a warm, caring and hopeful lady with an unforgettable smile. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She will be truly missed.Surviving are a son, Charles Ames and his wife, Mary of Richfield Springs; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and John Compton of Oneonta, and Carolyn and Ralph Wilston of Mainesburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Marissa Panayiotides and her husband, Marko, Erika Ames and Bethany Ames, Bryan Compton, Jennifer Catella and her husband, Nicholas, Randon Wilston, Ethan Wilston and Nathaniel Wilston; one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Catella.Besides her parents; and husband, Albert; she was preceded in death by a brother, Lyman Wing; and a sister, Lucy Wing.The family will be present in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011.Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Deborah Waldron, pastor will officiate. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery will be private.Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Memorial Fund of the Church of Christ Uniting. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
